CONVERSATIONS WITH CARL JUNG
Richard
I. Evans
Professor of Psychology
University of Houston
Archive Notes:
The following transcripts of the filmed interviews with C. G. Jung, conducted by Richard Evans in August 1957,
were originally prepared by Dr. Evans and published
in 1964
by D. Van Nostrand Company, Inc.,
Princeton, New Jersey.
A complete transcription of the four filmed interviews also appears in C. G. Jung Speaking: Interviews and Encounters, ed. William McGuire and R. F. C. Hull, pp. 276-352.
In this initial publication of the conversations, Dr. Evans included some interesting and historically important introductory material on his film project, along with the initial correspondence with Jung. The order of portions of the conversation in this transcript has, however, been slightly rearranged into subject categories, and thus do not precisely follow the actual conversation as recorded (the version in C. G. Jung Speaking reproduces the order of conversation more exactly).
While the transcript in C. G. Jung Speaking is a verbatim transcript of Jung's comments in the films, it often abbreviates or summarizes Evans' questions. In this edition, Dr. Evans includes a generally complete transcription of his questions as spoken.
The transcript given below has been lightly edited for a few typos and spelling errors, and is based on the 1964 publication, Conversations with Carl Jung and Reactions from Ernest Jones. (The interview with Ernest Jones had no bearing on Jung or these filmed interviews, and is not reproduced here.)
