Meditations

The Day of Holy Francis of Assisi

(October 4th)

THE COLLECT

Make us, O Lord, instruments of thy peace. Where there is hatred, let us sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is sadness, joy; where there is darkness, light. O Divine Master, grant that we may not so much seek to be understood as to understand; not so much to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; it is in dying that we are born again to eternal life.

THE LESSON

The lesson is taken from the Hymn of the Creatures of the Holy Francis of Assisi:

O most high, almighty, good God, to Thee belongeth praise, glory, honour and blessing. Praised be my Lord God, with all His creatures, and especially our brother the sun, who brings us the light. Fair is he, and shining with a very great splendour. O Lord, he signifies to us Thee. Praised be my Lord for our sister the moon, and for the stars, the which he has set dear and lovely in heaven. Praised be my Lord for our brother the wind, and for air and cloud, calms and all weather, by which Thou upholdest in life all creatures. Praised be my lord for our sister water, who is very serviceable unto us, and humble and precious and clear. Praised be my Lord for our brother fire, through whom Thou givest us light in the darkness, he is bright and pleasant and very mighty and strong. Praised be my Lord for our mother the earth, the which doth sustain and keep us, and bringeth forth diverse fruits, and flowers, and many colours, and grass. Praise ye and bless ye the Lord and give thanks unto Him, and serve Him with great humility.

THE GOSPEL

The gospel is taken from the Gospel according to St. John:

Jesus said: The hour is come that the Son of Man should be glorified. Amen, Amen, I say unto you, except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone; but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal. If any man serve Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there shall also My servant be. Father, glorify Thy name. Then came a voice from heaven saying: I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.
